7 Reasons That English Learners Fail (And How You Can Avoid These Traps


Learning a new language is difficult and can be the source of many headaches. But being able to communicate effectively in another language is important, especially for people who work internationally or who live abroad. One of the most universal languages spoken around the world is English. This language is learned by people in most countries and is the top language for business communications. For this reason, learning English can be extremely beneficial.
However, English can also be a struggle to learn for many people. With its silent e’s at the ends of words and letters not pronounced, many foreigners struggle with learning English. You can make this challenge easier by avoiding a few commonly made mistakes. The following are seven mistakes to avoid when you are trying to learn how to speak English.

1. Do not avoid speaking or writing in English

Practice makes perfect. Focus on learning a new set of words each day or practicing your English skills either through writing or by speaking with someone in English. These activities will help you feel more comfortable and learn the language faster. Remember, if something feels difficult, it means that you need to practice it more often. By forcing yourself to do these activities each and every day, you will reach your goals faster.

2. Do not hang out with people who speak your native language too often

Although you will want to take a break from learning a new language at times, breaking out of your comfort zone is also important. You can make these positive steps by finding a group of foreigners who are in the same position as you are learning English, or by making friends with native English speakers. In either case, speaking frequently will help you to learn English faster and will help you to get to know how to do so conversationally instead of by textbook.

3. Do not beat yourself up

Learning a new language can be difficult, especially when you are learning a language that is spoken by so many people around the world. It is easy to get discouraged over not being further along in your ability to converse. Don't give up!  The more you practice, the more you will progress. And focusing on what you have learned is more important than focusing on what you cannot remember.

4. Do not use poor materials

Learning a new language is difficult enough. You do not need to make it more difficult by using poorly designed materials. To make your journey toward fluent English speaking easier, it is a good idea to invest in higher quality and proven language learning materials. These tools will help you learn faster and more effectively, which will ultimately make you feel more encouraged and enjoy speaking English more.

5. Do not forget why you are learning the language

Something must have compelled you to want to learn how to speak English. If you keep this reason in mind while learning the language, it can help motivate you when the going gets tough.

6. Do not set outrageous goals

You will not be fluent in only one month of practice. It is simply not realistic. Although it is a good idea to set goals for yourself, setting ones that are not reachable will only frustrate you and make you feel less encouraged to continue on your path to learning a new language. Instead, focus on goals that are achievable and celebrate your successes along the way. This optimism will make learning English more enjoyable.

7. Do not stop having fun

When you stop enjoying speaking English, you will stop learning. Find fun ways to incorporate your education into your daily life, such as through movies, social scenes, or anywhere else makes using English fun. This enjoyment will help you move forward faster with your language skills and will keep you on track for success.


Learning how to speak English should be fun. Stay motivated by setting achievable goals, and find ways to have fun while you learn.

Why Some Students fail to progress in English!

Have you ever witnessed a situation where teaching English as a second language becomes so difficult that you find some of your students unable to make significant progress after a considerable long period of time? Well, stay with me while I explain my own personal observation with some of my students. The other day, during one of my teaching sessions, I asked some of my students to differential between number fourteen and forty and to my surprise most of them couldn’t. But that was only a tip of the bag as when I further asked them to spell their names in English that also proven to be a Herculean task. This made  me worried as I have just been transferred to a new school. Immediately, I started an investigation by discussing  this issue with some teachers and the following was the result my findings:


–Inadequacy of the Course Book


Foundation in any thing is the most important. However, a careful look at the course book reveals that the foundation course  which should enable the students to master the reading and writing skills is absolutely inadequate. The exercises and activities are not well designed and organized to give students the opportunity to grasp the basic of the language. In consequence they continue to face basic problems in reading and writing.
– Students’ attitude towards the language
Most of our students think that it is not necessary to learn a foreign language and as such they are not motivated to devote their effort to learn. This negative attitude is causing frustration to the teachers and impacting their enthusiasm. A teacher who knows that he or she will have to face a group of disinterested students will lack the zeal to do the optimal and students will be the losers in the final analysis.


– Size of the Classroom


Added to the above mentioned problems, teachers usually have to deal with a large class. The number of students far exceeds what is reasonable so this make it very difficult to handle and these uninterested students are taking advantages of the  situation to practice their nonchalant attitudes.


– Lack of cooperation from Parent


The role of parents towards the education of their children can not be over emphasized. But pathetically, most of them are not doing enough to monitor their children’s learning progress.This is dealing an adverse blow on the learning process of their children.


– Solution

For every problem there must be a solution, if we honestly search for one. Contemplation on the above problems leads us to the following solutions:

– Redesigning of the Course Book

I think if the present course book is resign to include worksheet, flash cards, other activities, exercises and necessary learning aids to assist the students to master the basic skills of reading and writing then they may not encounter difficulties in the
understanding of further advanced lessons.

–  The Role of the Teacher

In relation to students’ negative attitude towards the target language, the teacher should endeavor to create a classroom situation wherein students will feel motivated and encouraged to learn the language. The teacher should use inspirational speeches to emphasize the need of learning English in this technological age.

– The Role of Parents

In order for teachers to be successful, their effort must be supported by parents and guardians. This cooperation will create a sense of discipline and responsibility on the part of the students and consequently enhanced the learning process.

– Reduction of Classroom size

The number of students in the class should be reasonable to enable the teacher to easily handle them. A class which is relatively small gives the teacher the opportunity to teach well and therefore monitor the progress of the students. So if there is any problem in the learning process it could be solved at the initial stage.
